Patriotic Puppies: Memorial Day Dog DIYs

With many of our American readers heading into the Memorial Day long weekend, we thought we would share a collection of DIY ideas for including your furry friends in the weekend festivities.  Get inspired and then visit the linked posts in our archives for full recipes and tutorials. These fun little DIYs and recipe ideas can be created in red, white, and blue or taken as inspiration for any colours you wish!  If you would like us to try and create a special post for an upcoming holiday or occasion in your part of the world, drop us a comment here or on Facebook.
  • Make your dog a colourful fleece tug toy.  The loop toy pictured above is our basic DIY fleece tug toy (fleece strands: double blue opposites, single red, single white), with the working end knotted back through the starting end then tied as shown below:

  • Play dress up with a new bandana or bow-tie in patriotic colours and/or patterns. Even if you are short on time (or sewing skills), you can still create some custom flair for the festivities. Try adding a cute iron-on to a pre-fab handkerchief or bandana or creating a simple no-sew bandana in just a few minutes. We also have a simple DIY ribbon collar poppy for more traditional remembrance events or a memorial visits.
  • Add a little color to your favorite homemade dog treats by using tinted coconut (or another dog-friendly sprinkle - panko makes a great substitute for savory treats) as a topper, truffle coating, or even work it into the treats. No time to bake?  Dip your favorite dog treats in melted carob and add sprinkles for an easy shortcut or cool down with a quick and colourful frozen treat like our Fruity Yogurt Stars.
  • Have fun together!  Sometimes the best things are the simplest.  Your dog won't mind not having a fancy new toy, treats, or accessories as long as they are have FUN with their favourite friends. Remember: Holiday celebrations can be scary for our furry friends. Make sure your pets are safe and secure, and take care if you are traveling together for the holiday weekend.
