{RECIPE} Smooth Roll-and-Cut Peanut Butter Dog Treats


Did you know that November is Peanut Butter Lovers Month? Oh yeah...we LOVE our peanut butter! In honour of peanut butter lovers everywhere and in preparation for some fun variations on this base recipe used in our upcoming holiday posts, we're sharing our smooth roll-and-cut peanut butter dog treat dough. Yummy!


Doggy dough ingredients skip added sugar, are typically lower in fat, and often use gluten-free flours so it isn't really a surprise that they typically feel/handle differently from human cookie/biscuit doughs when we're mixing, rolling, cutting, and handling them. Although this peanut butter treat dough is still very different from a human cookie dough, it does have an almost cookie-like handling quality (and smell!) and is easy to work with for roll-and-cut treats.

Smooth Roll-and-Cut Peanut Butter Dog Treats

1 egg
1/4 cup smooth peanut butter
1/4 cup room temperature water
Approximately 3/4 to 1 cup rice flour (or equivalent substitute flour)

Preheat over to 180C.  Combine peanut butter, egg, and water in a mixing bowl.  Incrementally add flour, mixing into a cohesive workable dough.  The amount of flour required will vary depending on your individual ingredients and any optional add-ins or substitutions. Missed the mark? No worries! You can add a little bit of water, a small amount of olive oil, or additional flour to adjust consistency if/as needed. Rest dough (optional). Roll, cut into desired shapes, and place on a prepared baking pan. Bake for approximately 10-15 minutes. Cooking time will vary with shape/size, so keep an eye on the oven. Cool before serving and storage.

Note: This dough also works well with the addition of milk powder (up to 1/4 cup of low-fat powder, added at the wet stage). Adding milk powder adds extra richness as well as nutritional value, but I find it also enhances workability and creates a slightly firmer/crisper baked result. Our local stores sell powered milk as well as powdered goats milk and powdered coconut milk, which can be used as alternatives to dairy milk. I've tried the coconut milk powder in other recipes - smells awesome!


Tips and Tricks:

  • Go natural or take care when when shopping to avoid artificial sweeteners in ingredients like peanut butter when used for your dogs - xylitol (also identified as sweetener E967) is particularly dangerous for dogs. I typically use a no added salt/sugar smooth peanut butter.
  • Peanut butter can be tricky to measure perfectly. Don't stress about it - close enough is good enough! There can be big differences in consistency of peanut butters as well. Little variations like that as well as variations in egg size, temperatures, etc are all  part of why we work incrementally when mixing. 
  • The treats can be broken for smaller dogs, or made bigger/smaller - just keep an eye on your cooking time - the smaller the cookie, the shorter the baking time.
  • For a crunchier treat, you can let baked treats sit a while in the cooling oven before removing to get a little crispier or pop the baked treats into a dehydrator
  • These treats can be frozen for longer storage.
