{RECIPE} Mardi Gras King Cake Dog Treats

We will (of course!) be celebrating with pancakes at our house, but for those of you looking for some fun and festive treats, how about baking up some king cake inspired dog cookies?  Don't let the Mardi Gras colours deceive you - these are almost all natural thanks to some tasty healthy add-ins with just a teensy bit of blue to pump up my purple.

Mardi Gras king cakes are usually bready pastry rings, sometimes stuffed with sweet fillings and/or a hidden figurine, and topped with colourful purple, green, and gold sugar. Not a very healthy treat for doggies.  These dog-friendly cookies honour the milk and egg base, but omit the sweetness in favour of colourful savory add-ins for an almost all-naturally coloured Mardi Gras cookie treat.

Mardi Gras Dog Treat King Cookies

1/4 cup of skim/trim milk powder
2 eggs
1 cup rice flour

Optional add-ins for colour (adjust or substitute to personal preference): 
  • Purple: 1/2 tsp beetroot powder + 2 drops of blue food colouring
  • Yellow: 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • Green: 1 tbsp wheatgrass powder

Preheat oven to 180C.  Combine the milk powder and egg, then incrementally add flour to form a nice workable dough. You can use a little more flour or add a touch of water if/as needed to adjust  consistency. Divide into three roughly equal portions.  Colour each portion with natural and/or artificial colours to your preference.  Rest the dough for approximately 30 minutes (completely optional, but helps workability).  This dough is suitable for roll and cut if you prefer, but the treats shown are hand formed as follows.  Hand roll into small balls.   Carefully combine one ball of each colour side-by-side (see image above) and roll in your hands to join into a tri-coloured ball.  Place on a prepared baking sheet.  Flatten gently.  Back for approximately 10-15 minutes.  Cool before serving and storage.

Tips and Tricks:
  • If you are making a larger batch of treats (or want a single-coloured dough), it's easiest to mix the powders (or colouring) with your liquids before adding the flour.
  • If your dog is lactose sensitive or you'd simply prefer a different recipe/flavour, you can make a similar cookie for dogs using any rollable dog treat dough as a base. Lighter coloured dough will work best for tinting.
  • The treats can be broken for smaller dogs, or made bigger/smaller - just keep an eye on your cooking time - the smaller the cookie, the shorter the baking time. 
  • These treats can be frozen for longer storage or the dough can be frozen unbaked for future use. 
  • Any baked treat can be left in the cooling oven for a slightly crisper texture or, if you want to get things extra crunchy without overbaking/burning, you can place the baked treats in the dehydrator (fresh from the oven or later) and dry them out.  Totally optional, of course!
