This are cool, grey, wet, and wintery here, but many of our readers will be celebrating the arrival of summer next week. In lieu of our usual Friday DIY, we have a round up of summer pet DIY ideas to help stay cool and healthy during hot weather. We also have frozen dog treat recipes in the archives if you need a frosty snack or no-bake treats if you can't stand the thought of turning on the oven. :) Keep cool, furfriends!
Clockwise from upper left:
- Shade Canopy for Outdoor Dog Bed (This Old House)
- Recycled Cargo Pant Cooling Vest (Instructables) Fun idea for a "backpack" as well!
- Dog Booties (She Knows on Youtube)
- Open Wall Airflow Dog House (Shanty 2 Chic)
- Natural Dog Paw Balm (Dalmatian DIY) Pamper and sooth sore paws or dry skin.
- Soak and Go Cooling Neck Wraps (Sew 4 Home) You can even share!
- Dog Shade Tent (Joann)
To keep cool in warm weather, we like to run/walk early/late, wander through shady places, swim in the ocean, dip in the river, cruise in the car with the windows down (or AC chilling on faster routes), and rest in the shade. Chilly treats are used for special cool-downs and of course there is always plenty of fresh water available. Any bandana can be chilled or wetted for evaporation, but for longer lasting cooling, our dogs have cooling collars (non-DIY, like these) and we will also wet the boys down or give them a rub with a damp chilly cloth with when its extra hot. We have tried cooling beds with Oli in the past, but he didn't like lying on them - he's more of a cool tile/floor kind of guy. In the garden, he likes to nest atop of my plants and burrow in the bark. Cheeky boy! Humphrey on the other hand is quite a heat-seeking sunbathing tart, so we have to keep an eye on him...
For those of you celebrating Father's Day this Sunday (it's in September here down under), we have free Father's Day printable pet cards available for download from our archives as well as our free Father's Day Newspaper pet printable. Pet parents might also enjoy some of our other kooky creations, like our fur-filled needle felted hearts or classic clay pet pawprints. Photos of or with your pets area always a pawesome gift idea as well. Enjoy your weekend and have fun together!
